A special message from Dr. Vaughn on Avian Flu

I would like to take this opportunity to mention the fact that one of my previous interns practices in Germany, and now the teacher has become the student. Dr. Cordula Tassani-Prell has been dealing with Avian Flu in her bird practice in Germany for about 3 years, and Dr. Vaughn contacts her often to better be able to answer his client's question and concerns.

Perhaps the most important thing Dr.Tassani-Prell has told Dr. Vaughn is that she has yet to positively identify Avian Flu infection in indoor companion parrots, canaries or finches.  She has only seen the infection in backyard fowl. This should give the pet owner's of America a lot of confidence that their indoor pet birds are at a very low risk of contracting this disease.

Dr. Vaughn does recommend that if an owner has backyard fowl they monitor them closely for any sign of illness and have them tested immediately. While we are NOT inciting panic about this disease, we do want you to KNOW that we are ready and willing to test any bird at anytime.
