CDC Report: Turtle-Associated Salmonellosis in Humans
Special Notice Any bird purchased from a pet store, bird fair or bird show should be tested for this disease for the bird's health and the family's health. The KY Department of Public Health has recently reported one case of psittacosis (Chlamydophila spp.) in a parakeet in Kentucky. The diagnosis was confirmed by PCR testing. This bird was associated with other birds distributed to pet stores from a single breeder in Florida and is associated with a nationwide incident in which there were many infected birds for sale. While psittacosis is considered a zoonotic disease, it is important to note that transmission to humans is rare. Human exposures typically come from either inhalation of dust from dirty cages containing dried bird feces or from fecal contamination in conjunction with hand-to-mouth contact. Careful hygiene practices and taking steps to avoid inhalation of dust (such as wearing a mask when cleaning cages) should help to avoid risk of contracting the disease. Infected birds may exhibit inappetence, malaise, diarrhea, and/or upper respiratory signs. Humans with the disease usually have symptoms similar to a cold or flu. Should infection occur, whether in birds or humans, psittacosis is treatable with antibiotics. No cases of human psittacosis have been reported with this most recent finding.
