The bottom of the cage should be lined with newspaper (the cheapest and easiest to
use), Astro-turf (make sure it has no loose ends that can be eaten or that can be caught by toenails) or the reptile
carpet available at most pet shops. Avoid sand, gravel, dirt, crushed corn cob and kitty litter. If you decide
to use the Astro-turf or the reptile carpet it is helpful to buy two Pieces so you can clean and dry one while
the other is in use. Iguanas enjoy having hardwood driftwood branches for basking. A water bowl big enough for
the iguana to get in and soak is also needed. IGUANAS NEED ACCESS TO WATER AT ALL TIMES, not just once weekly as
it had been suggested in the past. However, the water should be kept as clean as possible so change it at least
twice weekly or more frequently if it is dirty. In the native state iguanas are usually found in close association
with water. In drier parts of the country keep the cage humid by misting the iguana and the cage interior several
times a week. A humidifier also may be used.
The cage, branches and water bowl should be cleaned once a week or more often when dirty. Clean first with soap
and water, then allow to soak in a 3% (1:30) bleach solution for ten to fifteen minutes, then rinse very well with
plain water. |
